Hiring an International Student
One of Manderson’s top priorities is to become more globally diverse through incorporating many international cases, backgrounds and experiences into the curriculum. Many members of Manderson’s faculty have taught or conducted research overseas. We are convinced that the cultural insights offered by these international cases and our international students broaden Manderson students’ understanding of conducting business in a global environment.
Why hire a Manderson international student?
Manderson international MBAs bring invaluable team diversity and global market knowledge to your company. We feel confident that the skills and experiences acquired by working and establishing networks abroad are extremely valuable assets for today’s companies to compete in the global market.
Approximately 12% of the Manderson student body is comprised of international students. These students have graduated from top academic institutions and have multiple country expertise and language skills.
What are the guidelines for hiring an international student for internships and permanent employment?
One year internship and one year full-time employment with no paperwork or funds needed for work authorization.
How do you hire an international student?
Short-Term Employment
Most international students hold an F-1student visa while studying in the U.S. which authorizes them to work in the US via the Practical Training program. The U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service (CIS) defines Practical Training as paid employment related to a student’s field of study. The two most common types of practical training are:
Curricular Practical Training (CPT): Manderson international students are eligible to work in the U.S. as summer interns with no expense or extra paperwork on a company’s part, if the student opts for curricular practical training.
Optional Practical Training (OPT): This allows an international Manderson graduate up to 12 months of employment which can be used during summers or after graduation. The student needs to obtain endorsement from Manderson’s foreign student advisor and a work authorization card from the CIS.
Long-term employment
Graduates on an F-1 visa with OPT are permitted to continue to work in the United States once they apply for and receive an H-1B temporary work visa from the CIS. This visa allows the graduate to work in the U.S. for three years, renewable for one additional three year period, for a total of six years. The graduates must reapply to the CIS if they want to change firms.
What role does the employer play in obtaining an H-1B visa?
Employers should apply for an H-1B petition a few months before Optional Practical Training expires. Applying for H-1B status is a two-step process:
•The employer must file a Labor Condition Application (LCA) with The Department of Labor to certify that the rate of pay is equivalent to the prevailing wage rate for the specific occupation and job title.
•The employer must file a petition for H-1B status with the CIS office with jurisdiction over your company’s geographic area.
Helpful H1-B facts:
• CIS is authorized to issue 85,000 H-1Bs each year (this includes 20,000 visas for foreign nationals who have earned a Masters Degree or higher from a U.S. institution of higher education).
• CIS has special “premium processing” which guarantees H-1B processing in 15 days.
• Employer does NOT have to advertise.
• Employer does not need to show that there is no American available to do the job.
• H-1B is not a permanent Labor Certification.
What is the employer cost for sponsoring an H-1B visa?
The costs for H-1B filing for a U.S. employer
sponsor are the following:
• $190 for CIS filing fee.
• $750 education and training fee (if employer has a maximum of 25 full-time employees) or $1500 (if the employer has 26 or more full-time employees).
• $500 fraud prevention fee.
• $1,600–$3,000 attorney fees.
• Optional $1,000 premium 15 day processing filing fee.
